Business communication is broken. SMEs and founders are twisting and turning themselves into templates and hacks. They are tossed around by agencies and consultants – losing their edge and chasing growth at all costs.
It’s everyone’s fault – the technology platforms we rely on to reach our audiences at scale, the bro-marketers who promise the world but don’t actually know how to properly communicate themselves, Founders, who are influenced by the marketing narrative of quick growth, hacks, and wealth overnight, and Marketers who are overwhelmed from keeping up with constant changes.
Everyone and their grandparents seem to have an e-commerce store or a pseudo-influencer account. We are told to build our personal brand on LinkedIn because the platform is booming. If we sleep on the potential of TikTok, we’ll be left behind. And let’s not forget that we should build our website SEO which really is a long-term effort but will pay off eventually.
There are companies that you can pay to reach insta-fame follower counts, or new engagement levels on TikTok. Hundreds of people are hired to like videos on YouTube or comment a brand name on Reddit threads. GPTs are autogenerating comments on posts.
The narrative around Marketing is full of ‘should’s’ and ‘must’s’.
Gurus exploit financial vulnerability in building affiliate marketing (read pyramid) schemes and we see a surge of new agencies on the market that leverage AI to “help you go viral” and earn $10k a month in a matter of days. People are building libraries of content templates, new prompts, and marketing formulas that promise seven-figure growth.
The industry is becoming saturated with unethical behavior and exploitation.
Businesses are building themselves around platforms, technology, and trends. Brands are shaping themselves according to what they think their ideal audience wants them to be. There are businesses built for Discord and Google, Coffee Shops built for Instagram-perfect pictures, and events optimized to be shareable with viral potential. What is underneath once you peel the layers away? A business model ruled by external forces. Brands that operate on borrowed grounds.
We need to leap beyond the boundaries of our current communication models into the liminal space of purpose and connection. The space in which courage and action rule.
